My Process

Every project begins with a consultation. During this initial meeting I examine your textile, assess its condition, and discuss your goals and concerns. Consultations are an opportunity to ask questions, understand what treatment may involve, and determine the best course of action before any work begins — with no obligation to proceed.

Consultation

A thorough examination is carried out to assess the condition of your textile and identify areas of deterioration, instability, or risk. Findings are documented in a written condition report accompanied by detailed photography, providing a clear record of the object's state before any treatment begins. Condition reports are also available as a standalone service for clients who need documentation for insurance, loan, or collections management purposes.

Examination & Condition Reporting

Treatment is tailored to the specific needs of each object and carried out in accordance with the American Institute for Conservation’s (AIC) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice. All treatments are fully documented and, wherever possible, reversible — meaning any intervention can be undone in the future without causing additional harm to the textile.

Treatment may include:

  • Cleaning and stain reduction

  • Stabilization of fragile or deteriorating fibers

  • Structural repair and support

  • Consolidation of embroideries, beadwork, and surface decoration

  • Treatment of coated and composite textiles

A detailed treatment proposal outlining the recommended approach, timeline, and costs is provided for your approval before any work begins.

Conservation Treatment

Mounting & Packing

Proper mounting, packing, and transport are essential to the long term preservation of historic textiles. I fabricate custom padded mannequins and mounts tailored to the specific dimensions and support needs of each garment or object, ensuring safe display without placing stress on fragile fibers or seams.

Packing and transport support is also available for loans, traveling exhibitions, and collection moves, with mounts and housing designed to protect textiles throughout handling and transit.

All mounts and supports are constructed from archival materials appropriate for long term contact with historic textiles.

Storage & Housing Recommendations

Appropriate storage is one of the most effective ways to slow the deterioration of historic textiles. I provide tailored storage and housing recommendations based on the specific needs of each object, taking into account material, condition, and the environment in which it will be kept.

Services include guidance on storage materials, environmental conditions, rehousing of individual objects or entire collections, and the fabrication of custom archival supports and enclosures.

Whether you are caring for a single family heirloom or managing a large institutional collection, proper storage solutions can significantly extend the life of your textiles.
